Whispers of the Cypress
An Immersive Taiwan Forest Experience
“This Final Project offers a framework for self-discovery and an opportunity to deploy skills and Knowledge gained so far on the programme to develop into an interdisciplinary project. It allows you to build a body of work that creates clarity and understanding of your interests within Communication Design.”
Brief of Final Project
My final project, titled “Whispers of the Cypress: An Immersive Taiwan Forest Experience”, aims to create an interactive art exhibition that highlights Taiwan’s endemic cypress forests and emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation. This exhibition employs a multi-sensory approach, incorporating visual, auditory, and olfactory elements to foster a deeper connection between the visitors and the natural environment. The goal is to provide an engaging experience that not only educates but also inspires action towards ecological preservation.
Through extensive research on Taiwan’s red cypress forests, I produced the film “Whispers of the Cypress: A Journey through Taiwan’s Cypress Forests,” aiming to convey both the beauty and the threats faced by these unique forests.
Inspired by Impressionist art and extensive research into Taiwan’s cypress forests, I used creative coding to transform my photographs taken in Taiwan’s Red Cypress forests into an immersive projection piece titled “Cypress Image.”

As French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, “Smell is the sense of memory and desire.” By offering an olfactory experience of Taiwan’s forest scent, I hope to evoke emotional responses and deepen viewers’ memories.
For the exhibition, I have created an additional website specifically designed for iPad format, which will be displayed on-site, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the project’s concept and engage interactively

This project has been a pivotal opportunity for me to develop new skills in digital media and communication design. By designing an immersive and interactive environment, I have not only achieved my goal of blending art and technology but have also gained a nuanced understanding of how these elements can be used to communicate complex messages about environmental conservation. This experience has reinforced my belief in the value of interdisciplinary approaches in design, where science, technology, and art come together to create experiences that are both meaningful and impactful.
